Although doing an in-place upgrade using Windows Update is usually the recommended method to install a new version, it’s likely that you’ll come across issues and errors as a result of custom configurations, possible software and device driver incompatibility, and other problems. A clean installation minimizes the change of running into problems, because it deletes everything on the hard drive and installs a fresh copy of Windows 10 with the October 2018 Update<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Additionally, if you’ve been using the same installation for some time, a clean installation of Windows 10<\/a> can help to improve startup times, memory usage, performance, and fix existing problems.<\/p>\n

In this hands-on video<\/a>, you’ll learn the steps to properly perform a clean installation of Windows 10 version 1809 on your desktop, laptop, or tablet using a USB bootable media created with the Microsoft Media Creation Tool.<\/p>\n

How to do a clean install of Windows 10 version 1809<\/h2>\n

After creating the USB bootable media using the Media Creation Tool, use these steps to do a clean install of Windows 10 to upgrade to the October 2018 Update:<\/p>\n

    Start your PC with the USB bootable media.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    Press any key to begin.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Click Install now<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    Click the Skip<\/strong> button if you’re reinstalling. (After the installation\u00a0Windows 10 will re-activate automatically.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  6. \n

    Check the\u00a0I accept the license terms<\/strong>\u00a0option.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  7. \n

    Click the Next<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  8. \n

    Select the\u00a0Custom: Install Windows only (advanced) <\/strong>option.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  9. \n

    Select each partition in the hard drive that you want to install Windows 10, and click the Delete<\/strong> button. (Usually, the “Drive 0” is the drive that contains all the installation files.)<\/p>\n

    Warning:<\/strong> Deleting a partition also deletes all data within. Also, it’s not a requirement to delete the partitions from a secondary hard drive.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n

    Select the hard drive (Drive 0 Unallocated Space) to install Windows 10.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Click the Next<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    After the installation, select your region in the first page of the\u00a0out-of-the-box experience (OOBE).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Click the Yes<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Select your keyboard layout.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  15. \n

    Click the Yes<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    If you’re not setting a second keyboard layout, click the Skip <\/b>button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  17. \n

    If your device is using an Ethernet connection, your PC will connect to the network automatically. Otherwise, if you’re using a wireless connection, you’ll need to set up the connection manually.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Select the Set up for personal use<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  19. \n

    Click Next<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  20. \n

    Type your Microsoft account email, phone, or Skype identification.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  21. \n

    Click the Next <\/b>button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  22. \n

    Type your Microsoft account password.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  23. \n

    Click the Next <\/b>button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  24. \n

    Click the Create a PIN<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  25. \n

    Create a new PIN password.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  26. \n

    Click the OK<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Click the\u00a0Do it later\u00a0<\/strong>button. (You can always link your phone to your PC using the Settings app.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Click the\u00a0Accept<\/strong>\u00a0button to enable Cortana on your device. (If you want to use the “Hey Cortana” feature, also check the Respond when I say “Hey Cortana”<\/strong> option.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
