Windows 10 version 2004, May 2020 Update, is expected to rollout to compatible devices sometime in May, and if you want to avoid problems<\/a> the best option to upgrade is to perform a clean installation.<\/p>\n

Although an upgrade using Windows Update is usually the recommended option, you’re likely to run into issues and errors, which could result from existing drivers and apps compatibility issues, custom configurations, and other problems. When you use a clean installation, you’re deleting everything on the hard drive and installing a fresh copy of Windows 10 (version 2004)<\/a> that significantly reduces the chances of problems.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, if you’ve been using the same installation for a long time, a clean installation of Windows 10<\/a> can help to improve performance, startup times, memory usage, and fix existing issues.<\/p>\n

In this hands-on video<\/a>, you’ll learn the steps to perform a clean installation of Windows 10 version 2004 on your computer using a USB bootable media created with the Microsoft Media Creation Tool.<\/p>\n

Important:<\/strong> If you try to download the Media Creation Tool before the May 2020 Update is officially released, you won’t be able to install the new feature update. These instructions are to prepare you to upgrade to version 2004 using the clean installation once it’s available.<\/span><\/div>\n

How to perform a clean install of Windows 10 version 2004<\/h2>\n

To perform a clean installation of the Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004), use these steps:<\/p>\n

    Start your PC with the USB bootable media.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    Press any key to begin.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Click the Next <\/strong>button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Click the Install now<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    Click the Skip<\/strong> button if you’re reinstalling. (If Windows 10 was already activated, after the installation it’ll re-activate automatically.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  6. \n

    Check the\u00a0I accept the license terms<\/strong>\u00a0option.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  7. \n

    Click the Next<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  8. \n

    Select the\u00a0Custom: Install Windows only (advanced) <\/strong>option.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  9. \n

    Select each partition in the hard drive that you want to install Windows 10, and click the Delete<\/strong> button. (Usually, the “Drive 0” is the drive that contains all the installation files.)<\/p>\n

    Warning:<\/strong> Deleting a partition also deletes all the data. Also, it’s not required to delete the partitions from a secondary hard drive.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n

    Select the hard drive (Drive 0 Unallocated Space) to install Windows 10.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Click the Next<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    After the installation, select your region in the first page of the\u00a0out-of-the-box experience (OOBE).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Click the Yes<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  14. \n

    Select your keyboard layout.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  15. \n

    Click the Yes<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  16. \n

    If you’re not setting a second keyboard layout, click the Skip <\/b>button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  17. \n

    If your device is using an Ethernet connection, your device will connect to the network automatically. If you’re using a wireless connection, you’ll need to set up the connection manually.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  18. \n

    Select the Set up for personal use<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  19. \n

    Click the Next <\/strong>button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  20. \n

    Type your Microsoft account credential.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  21. \n

    Click the Next <\/b>button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  22. \n

    Type your Microsoft account password.<\/p>\n

  23. \n

    Click the Next <\/b>button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  24. \n

    Click the Create a PIN<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  25. \n

    Create a new PIN password.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  26. \n

    Click the OK<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  27. \n

    Select your privacy settings that best suits your needs.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  28. \n

    Click the\u00a0Accept <\/strong>button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  29. \n

    Click the Yes<\/strong> button if you want to use Timeline across devices.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  30. \n

    Click the\u00a0Do it later\u00a0<\/strong>button to skip linking your phone to your PC. (You can always do this from the Settings app.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  31. \n

    Click the Next<\/strong> button to set up OneDrive automatically. (Alternatively, you can click the Only save file to this PC<\/strong> option to skip this step.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  32. \n

    Click the No<\/strong> button to skip the Office 365 setup.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  33. \n

    Click the\u00a0Accept<\/strong>\u00a0button to enable Cortana on your device. (If you want to use the “Hey Cortana” feature, also check the Respond when I say “Hey Cortana”<\/strong> option.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Once you complete the steps, the setup will finish and you’ll be back into the desktop running the May 2020 Update.<\/p>\n
