However, you can always choose another time range. For example, every 52 weeks, this option ensures your device gets updated once a year.

FAQs about disabling updates on Windows 11

Here’s a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) and answers about disabling automatic updates for Windows 11.

Can I disable automatic updates permanently on Windows 11?

Yes. You can disable updates permanently using the Group Policy Editor on Windows 11 Pro or through the Registry Editor on both Pro and Home editions. The process involves disabling the “Configure Automatic Updates” policy or setting the “NoAutoUpdate” value to “1” in the Registry.

How long can I pause updates in Windows 11?

By default, you can pause updates for up to five weeks. However, by editing the “FlightSettingsMaxPauseDays” Registry key, you can extend this period to up to 1042 weeks (roughly 20 years).

How can I stop a specific Windows 11 update from installing?

You can use Microsoft’s “Show or hide updates” troubleshooter tool (wushowhide.diagcab) to block specific updates or drivers from installing automatically.

Will disabling Windows Update affect security?

Yes. Disabling updates means your device won’t receive new patches or security fixes, potentially leaving it exposed to vulnerabilities. If you permanently disable updates, it’s recommended to check for and install critical updates manually every few months.

Can I disable updates on Windows 11 Home without Group Policy?

Yes. Windows 11 Home users can edit the Registry to disable updates by creating the “WindowsUpdate” and “AU” keys under the Policies path and setting the “NoAutoUpdate” DWORD value to “1.”

What’s the safest way to pause updates temporarily?

The safest method is to use the Settings app to pause updates for 1 week (or more if configured in the Registry). This prevents unwanted updates while keeping Windows Update functional for future use.

Can I re-enable updates after turning them off?

Yes. If you’ve disabled updates using Group Policy, set the policy back to “Not Configured.” If you used the Registry, delete the “NoAutoUpdate” value or set it to “0,” then restart your computer.

How do I stop Windows from automatically rebooting after installing updates?

You can adjust “Active hours” in Settings or use Group Policy (“No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations”) to prevent automatic restarts after updates.

Is there a risk of breaking Windows if I modify the Registry?

Yes. Incorrectly editing the Registry can cause system issues. Always create a full system backup or restore point before making changes.

Why are you disabling updates in the operating system? What method did you use? Let me know in the comments.

Update November 4, 2025: This guide has been updated to ensure accuracy and reflect changes to the process.

You can still disable automatic updates on Windows 11, and in this guide, you’ll learn how.

[23
95,19,2715,2576
post-136701","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-windows","tag-difficulty-level-beginner","tag-how-to","tag-windows-11","tag-windows-help

How to disable automatic updates on Windows 11 - Pureinfotech

<meta name="description" content="To disable automatic updates on Windows 11, use the Pause option in Windows Update or Group Policy to turn it off permanently.
