UPDATED 3\/7\/2025:<\/strong> If you plan to install Windows 11, you can create a custom partition instead of letting the setup to use the entire hard drive space, and in this guide, we’ll show you how.<\/p>\n

Although you can change the size of a partition at any time, if you plan to set up a dual-boot system or want to store your files in a separate space, you can create a custom partition for Windows 11 and apps during the installation process.<\/p>\n

This guide<\/a> will teach you how to create and install Windows 11<\/a> on a custom partition.<\/p>\n

Create custom partition to install Windows 11<\/h2>\n

To install Windows 11 on a custom partition, use these steps:<\/p>\n

  1. \n

    Start your PC with a Windows 11 USB install media<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

  2. \n

    Press any key to begin.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Click the Next<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

    Click the Next<\/strong> button again.<\/p>\n

    Choose the “Install Windows 11”<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

    Check the “I agree everything will be deleted including files, apps, and settings”<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  7. \n

    Type the product key to activate Windows 11<\/a>, or click the “I don’t have a product key”<\/strong> option if this is a reinstallation.<\/p>\n

    Choose the edition of Windows 11<\/a> to install on the computer.<\/p>\n

    Click the Next<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Click the Accept<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  11. \n

    Select the drive to install the operating system (if applicable).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  12. \n

    Click the Create Partition<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

    Choose the amount of space (in megabytes) to allocate for Windows 11 and apps.<\/p>\n

    Quick note:<\/strong> The operating system requires at least 64GB of space, but to prevent problems with future updates and running out of space installing apps, you should create a partition with equal or more than 100GB.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n

    Click the Apply<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  15. \n

    Click the OK<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

    Quick note:<\/strong> Windows 11 will automatically create the additional partitions required to install and run the system in addition to the custom partition.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n
  16. \n

    Select the largest primary partition. For example, “Disk 0 Partition 3”<\/strong> (in my case).<\/p>\n

    Click the Next<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  18. \n

    Click the Install<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Once you complete the steps, the setup will install Windows 11 on the custom partition.\u00a0After the installation, you will have to complete the out-of-box experience (OOBE) to create an account and finish setting up the installation.<\/p>\n

    Create partition with unallocated space<\/h3>\n

    If you did not use the remaining space during the installation, you can to create an additional partition to store files.<\/p>\n

    To create additional partitions on Windows 11, use these steps:<\/p>\n

    1. \n

      Open Settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    2. \n

      Click on System<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    3. \n

      Click on Advanced storage settings<\/strong> under the “Storage management” section.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    4. \n

      Click the Disks & volumes<\/strong> setting.<\/p>\n

      Click on the drive with the available space.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    6. \n

      Click the Create volume<\/strong> button and choose the “Create Simple Volume”<\/strong> option.<\/p>\n

      Confirm a label and drive letter for the new partition.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    8. \n

      Select the NTFS<\/strong> option for the “File System” setting.<\/p>\n

      Specify the amount of space for the partition.<\/p>\n

      Quick note:<\/strong> If you plan to use the remaining space for the partition, then you can skip this setting.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n

      Click the Format<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      After you complete the steps, the partition should be formatted with the settings you specified and be available for use on File Explorer.<\/p>\n
