UPDATED 5\/13\/2025:<\/strong> The May 2025 update for Windows 11<\/a> is now rolling out as build 26100.4061 (KB5058411) in the Stable Channel as a mandatory security install. This quality update for version 24H2 is expected to finally graduate the Windows Recall feature from preview, meaning it will start rolling out to Copilot+ PCs not enrolled in the Windows Insider Program.<\/p>\n

Microsoft is also bringing Click to Do and Semantic Indexing for Windows Search out of preview and into the Stable Channel for Copilot+ PCs.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the May 2025 release delivers improvements and changes for other components, including Widgets, File Explorer, Settings, Windows Share, Start menu, Taskbar, and more.<\/p>\n

These features and changes are gradually being rolled out to supported devices, meaning they will take some time to reach everyone. The availability of some changes and capabilities will depend on your location.<\/p>\n

In addition, the company is also releasing<\/a> (logs from Stable Channel as non-security release<\/a> and the Release Preview Channel<\/a>) security fixes and changes for Windows 11 23H2 with build 22631.5335 (KB5055629). This update brings several of the same improvements coming to version 23H2, such as Windows Narrator Speech Recap, mobile sidebar for the Start menu, and changes for File Explorer, Windows Share, Widgets, and more.<\/p>\n

However, the release for version 23H2 won’t include any of the AI features, as they require several components that are only available in version 23H2.<\/p>\n

Finally, the same fixes and changes are also available for Windows 11 22H2 as build 22621.5335 (KB5058405) in the Stable Channel as an optional install.<\/p>\n

Important:<\/strong> Usually, the company doesn’t release new features immediately. A new feature advertised as part of an update only marks the beginning of the gradual rollout. It also depends on the geographical location, software, and hardware configuration. For example, because of the rules in Europe, many features take longer to arrive.<\/span><\/div>\n

Windows 11 24H2 build 26100.4061 (KB5058411)<\/h2>\n

These are the changes and improvements coming with the next Patch Tuesday update of Windows 11 24H2.<\/p>\n

New Windows Recall<\/h3>\n

Starting with build 26100.4061, Windows 11 ships with the Windows Recall<\/a> feature for Copilot+ PCs that feature an NPU with 40+ TOPS.<\/p>\n

Windows Recall is a new feature that uses AI to track all your activities across apps and then makes everything you have done on your computer searchable using natural language.<\/p>\n

According to the company<\/a> (logs from Stable Channel as non-security release<\/a> and the Release Preview Channel<\/a>), this AI feature will be available starting in early 2025 in most markets. However, in the European Economic Area, it will roll out later this year.<\/p>\n

Also, Recall AI is optimized for select languages, including English, Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.<\/p>\n

New Click to Do<\/h3>\n

This quality update will also start rolling out the Click to Do feature to all supported Copilot+ PCs.<\/p>\n

\"Click<\/p>\n

Click to Do is a feature that gives you a number of additional actions that you can perform on text and elements found on a Recall snapshot. For example, by selecting text from the image, you can copy text to your clipboard, open the selected text with an app, search the web, open a link, and send an email.<\/p>\n

This feature is available inside and outside of Windows Recall.<\/p>\n

You can launch Click to Do from the Start menu,\u00a0using the “Windows key + mouse-click”<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0“Windows key + Q”<\/strong> keyboard shortcuts, or you can launch it <\/span>from the Snipping Tool controls.<\/p>\n

Microsoft notes that you can also open Click to Do by swiping from the right edge of the screen on touch-enabled devices. In addition, there’s a new Group Policy setting to manage the AI feature<\/a> for network administrators.<\/p>\n

It’s important to note that the functions will vary per device and market, and the feature will arrive later this year in the European Economic Area.<\/p>\n

New Semantic Indexing<\/h3>\n

The update KB5058411 also begins the rollout of the Semantic Indexing<\/a> feature for Copilot+ PCs.<\/p>\n

Semantic Indexing is a technique that enhances how your computer’s files are indexed and searched. By leveraging AI, particularly Natural Language Processing (NLP), Semantic Indexing allows Windows 11 to understand and interpret the meaning behind your queries. This lets you find files, settings, and other content using natural language.<\/p>\n

This search capability will be available from the Start menu, Windows Search interface, Taskbar Search box, File Explorer, and the Settings app.<\/p>\n

In addition, the AI search will also work to find photos stored and saved in OneDrive and images stored locally on the computer.<\/p>\n

Finally, exact matches for your keywords within the text of your cloud files will also appear in the search results.<\/p>\n

The new search works only with specific text, image, and document formats. Optimized for select languages (English, Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Japanese, and Spanish)<\/p>\n

This feature does not replace the traditional Windows Search capability. Instead, it will complement the existing search feature.<\/p>\n

Windows Narrator with new Speech Recap<\/h3>\n

Windows 11 build\u00a0 26100.4061 also rolls out an updated version of Windows Narrator with the Speech Recap feature that can track the spoken words, which you can then access for quick reference.<\/p>\n

Start menu with new mobile sidebar<\/h3>\n

Microsoft is finally making\u00a0the\u00a0mobile sidebar<\/a> available. The new feature gives you quick access to make phone calls, send SMS messages, access your photos, and<\/span>\u00a0share content between your mobile devices and PC.<\/p>\n

The new sidebar will be available after linking your mobile device with your computer using the Phone Link and Link to Windows apps.<\/p>\n

In addition, this release fixes a couple of issues with the Start menu, including a rendering issue with the “Sign out”<\/strong> and “More options”<\/strong> buttons when changing the text size.<\/p>\n

Widgets changes for developers<\/h3>\n

Starting with this update, web developers can create interactive widgets for Windows 11.<\/p>\n

New Recommended section for File Explorer<\/h3>\n

This update adds a new “Recommended” section<\/a> to the File Explorer’s home page, which will display your Microsoft 365 files.<\/p>\n

Also, if you change the “Text size” setting in the Settings app from the Accessibility section, the text scaling will now apply across File Explorer dialogs.<\/p>\n

Microsoft also notes that it’s improving the performance of extracting zipped content and fixing the address bar’s problem of not showing the path correctly.<\/p>\n

In this release, the Settings app, more specifically the “Apps” section, includes a new “Actions on Copilot+ PCs”<\/strong> setting to manage which apps Windows can recommend actions.<\/p>\n

Windows Share new edit options<\/h3>\n

Microsoft is updating the Windows Share interface to edit images with options to crop, rotate, and add filters before sharing.<\/p>\n

The Studio Effects automatic framing filter will now be enabled by default when the camera is used for the first time. This change will only happen on supported devices.<\/p>\n

The May 2025 update doesn’t introduce anything significant for the Taskbar but addresses issues with app icons and navigation using the arrow keys.<\/p>\n

Starting with this release, app icons on the desktop will no longer show an accent-colored backplate.<\/p>\n

This update also fixes display, ExtFloodFill, graphics, and Hyper-V Manager.<\/p>\n

In the normal rollout, the “Windows Update” settings estimate the time for how long the computer will be offline to install updates.<\/p>\n

In addition, this release addresses an issue affecting internet connectivity on devices after resuming from sleep.<\/p>\n

This update fixes an issue when the operating system stops unexpectedly.\u00a0It also resolves an error message that appears with a\u00a0Blue Screen of Death<\/a> during normal usage,<\/span>\u00a0with a user profile redirected to a network VHDx.<\/p>\n

Finally, the May 2025 update fixes a problem where some content pages with JPEG images were not displaying correctly, an unexpected microphone mute issue, and Eye Controller not launching.<\/p>\n

These are the improvements coming for the next Patch Tuesday update of Windows 11 23H2 (and 22H2).<\/p>\n

The May 2025 update for Windows 11 23H2 doesn’t introduce anything significant for the Taskbar but addresses a navigation issue using the arrow keys.<\/p>\n

This update addresses a USB connectivity problem on new Intel-based PCs that specifically prevents the built-in camera from working with Windows Hello unless a security feature (ESS) is disabled through a specific setting.<\/p>\n

Also, this update includes a fix for an issue that could cause slower opening times for Excel files with links to multiple network files when the file is located on an SMB share with Access Based Enumeration enabled.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, you’ll find that this update resolves two issues, including one where certain Xbox Elite Wireless Controllers might have a non-functional keyboard and show an error in the device manager due to specific firmware versions, and another where the driver verifier would freeze during gamepad controller driver certification for Windows Hardware Quality Labs testing.<\/p>\n

Finally, this release updates the list of drivers that are at risk for Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver (BYOVD) attacks.<\/p>\n
