In the latest preview builds available in the <a href=\"https:\/\/pureinfotech.com\/build-26120-6772-kb5065797-windows-11-25h2\/\">Dev and Beta Channels<\/a>, the company has confirmed that it&#8217;s removing known workarounds that allowed users to bypass the online account and connection requirements during the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE).<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/windows-insider\/2025\/10\/06\/announcing-windows-11-insider-preview-build-26220-6772-dev-channel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official announcement<\/a>, Microsoft is <strong><em>&#8220;removing known mechanisms for creating a local account in the Windows Setup experience.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> The company says these unofficial methods not only bypassed the Microsoft Account requirement but also skipped critical setup screens, leaving devices improperly configured.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Users will need to complete OOBE with internet and a Microsoft Account to ensure the device is set up correctly,&#8221;<\/em> the software giant explains.<\/p>\n<h2>Microsoft disables online account bypass commands<\/h2>\n<p>Until now, advanced users could easily skip the Microsoft Account requirement by using special commands, such as <code>OOBE\\BYPASSNRO<\/code>\u00a0or <code>start ms-cxh:localonly<\/code>, during the setup process. You can still bypass the Microsoft Account and internet requirements during the initial setup.<\/p>\n<p>The workaround using the Developer Console with the <code>WinJS.Application.restart(\"ms-cxh:\/\/LOCALONLY\")<\/code> command still works.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the command to add a Registry entry to configure the <code>HideOnlineAccountScreens<\/code> feature will still allow you to bypass the requirements and continue creating a local account.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, if you&#8217;re installing Windows 11 Pro, you can choose the <strong>&#8220;Set up for work or school&#8221;<\/strong> option and create a local account using the <a href=\"https:\/\/pureinfotech.com\/install-windows-11-without-microsoft-account\/#install_windows11_pro_no_msa\"><strong>&#8220;Domain join instead&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> option.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, <a href=\"https:\/\/pureinfotech.com\/windows-11-installation-unsupported-hardware-unattended-answer-file\/\">creating an unattended setup file<\/a> to include the local user details still works in this release. This approach is significantly more complex and is intended for network administrators or advanced users who are comfortable with automation scripts.<\/p>\n<p>You can also use third-party tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/pureinfotech.com\/rufus-create-bootable-windows-11-25h2-usb\/\">Rufus<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pureinfotech.com\/ventoy-create-bootable-usb-windows-11-10\/\">Ventoy<\/a> to create a custom USB bootable media that bypasses the Microsoft Account and internet requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft&#8217;s decision is part of its broader effort to unify the experience and ensure all users are connected to the cloud for security, backup, and device sync.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Microsoft is enforcing Microsoft Accounts<\/h2>\n<p>The company has repeatedly emphasized that a Microsoft Account is essential to <em><strong>&#8220;ensure devices are set up correctly&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> and provide seamless access to features such as OneDrive backup, cross-device syncing, and Microsoft online services. However, many users have resisted the requirement, citing privacy concerns and the desire to control how their data is linked to Microsoft&#8217;s ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>For now, Windows 11 Home and Pro editions in upcoming builds will require both an internet connection and a Microsoft Account during setup, with all major bypasses now disabled.<\/p>\n<h2>What&#8217;s next for the local account setup<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s possible that new bypasses will surface over time, but as of the latest Windows 11 preview builds, all major known workarounds have been patched. These changes are expected to roll out to production versions of Windows 11 in the coming weeks as part of a cumulative update.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, Microsoft is also testing a new option that allows users to rename their default user folder during setup, addressing one of the main reasons people opt for local account setups, controlling the automatically generated user folder name based on their Microsoft Account email.
